Thought for the Week
Thought for the Week
“Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:7-8
Suppose someone had actually died for you - perhaps pushing you out of the way of a speeding car at the cost of their own life, or taking your place in a line of people to be gassed in a concentration camp. Wouldn’t you feel that your life had become infinitely more precious, and must not be wasted, for the sake of the one who had given their life for you? You would be overwhelmed with thankfulness to that person, only sorry that you would be unable to express your thanks. Or perhaps you would be consumed by guilt, thinking you were not worth the cost of someone’s life.
But someone has died for you, and has saved you for more than this life. Jesus is alive. You do have the opportunity to thank him, to live for him, and to be free of guilt.
“Lord Jesus, give me a clearer understanding of how much you have done for me, so that I may overflow with love, joy and grace to those around me.” (Scripture Union prayer for 2nd January 2009, read after this Thought for the Week had been prepared.) JK
